Spring blooms: the Judas tree

The Judas tree, or Cercis siliquastrum L., is native to southern Europe and western Asia. It is known for its beautiful pinkish-purple flowers that bloom in spring, before the leaves appear.

The flowers grow directly on the branches and trunk, a trait called "cauliflory"”. This makes for a special visual effect, as the flowers appear to bloom directly from the wood, attracting bees and butterflies and contributing to biodiversity.

The Judas tree has an interesting history as well. In popular tradition it is linked with legends and symbolism. According to the legend, Judas Iscariot, the disciple who betrayed Jesus, hanged himself from one of these trees, hence the name. After that, its flowers turned a deep purple color, representing pain and redemption.

Cercis siliquastrum is a strong and versatile plant that can grow in different types of soil and weather conditions. It is often used as a street tree and can grow to be 10 meters tall, providing shade and wonder in parks and gardens.

The Judas tree is more than just a tree; it is a symbol of rebirth and beauty, a reminder of nature's wonders. Its blooms in spring are a must see.
