The first phase of “Fiori Trasteverini” officially wrapped up on Saturday, June 26. This exciting initiative is dedicated to discovering urban biodiversity and spontaneous flora within the Botanical Garden of Rome.
The project successfully trialed the Citizen Science approach, actively engaging visitors in two key phases:
Field Research: During the first three sessions, participants teamed up to search for spontaneous species growing inside the Botanical Garden. They logged their findings on the iNaturalist platform using the dedicated app and collected plant specimens, which were then placed in presses to dry.
Creating an Herbarium: In the final session of the series, participants mounted the dried specimens according to rigorous scientific standards. They also created and applied a custom-made herbarium label designed specifically for this event.
The beautifully prepared specimens have been officially deposited in the Sapienza Herbarium Museum. They will now become part of the prestigious Herbarium Latinum collection, serving as a permanent scientific heritage for researchers, scholars, and nature enthusiasts alike.
A second series of sessions is scheduled to return this September!
