Herbarium Volunteers: Giancarlo Tondi

The Sapienza Herbarium Museum is thrilled to welcome a new and invaluable collaborator: Giancarlo Tondi, a highly respected florist with extensive experience in the world of plants. Driven by a deep passion and commitment to botanical knowledge, Giancarlo has chosen to put his expertise at the service of the community.

His mission? A fascinating and vital task: the recovery and enhancement of materials still unprocessed in the Giorgio Bazzichelli Herbarium, one of the museum’s most significant collections.

With patience and precision, Giancarlo is carefully mounting plant specimens preserved in old newspaper sheets and, when necessary, identifies them—breathing new life into botanical treasures that had been hidden away. These newly restored specimens will soon be reintegrated into the three parts that make up the Bazzichelli Herbarium.

It's a quiet but crucial job, one that demands both sharp eyes and deep knowledge of wild flora. And this is where Giancarlo truly shines: his years as a florist, paired with scientific intuition, allow him to recognize species and details that often go unnoticed—even by trained specialists.

Thanks to his contribution, the Herbarium Museum continues its mission to preserve, rediscover, and share the rich botanical heritage stored within its archives—making it more accessible for research, education, and public engagement.

Because every plant tells a story. And Giancarlo, with his hands and his passion, helps us not to forget it.
